Perth cruises range from short scenic trips along the Swan River to longer journeys to Fremantle, Swan Valley wine cruises, and wildlife cruises in Mandurah. The biggest difference is the cruise format and duration: some focus on city and river views, while others include wine tastings, lunch, or time on the water looking for dolphins. This guide compares the main cruise options, typical durations, and what to expect so you can choose the right trip for your plans.

Essential info at a glance

  • When to book: Swan Valley wine cruises operate on selected days, with more departures from November to March than April to October. Book once your dates are set, especially during summer and school holidays.
  • Time on the water: Short Mandurah dolphin cruises take around 1 to 1 hour 15 minutes. Longer wildlife trips can last 2.5 hours, while Swan Valley wine cruises run for about 6.5 hours.
  • What’s included: Inclusions vary. Wine cruises may include lunch, tastings and drinks at specified times. Extra drinks or premium beverage packages may cost more.
  • What changes the experience most: Choose a short scenic cruise for river views, a wine cruise for tastings and lunch, or a longer Mandurah trip for more wildlife and waterways.
  • Wildlife sightings: Dolphins are wild, so sightings aren't guaranteed. Some Mandurah Cruises tickets include a guarantee that lets you return for free if none are spotted.
  • Weather and routes: High river levels or weather conditions can affect timings or require coach transfers on some Swan Valley cruises.

Best time to take a Perth cruise

Morning cruises (around 9:45am–11:30am)

Morning departures work well if you want to make a cruise the first activity of your day. You can take a Swan River journey towards the Swan Valley, with wine cruises departing Perth at 10:30am, or head to Mandurah for a dolphin cruise. Morning light is useful for photos, and earlier departures leave time for other plans later in the day. Mandurah’s dolphin cruises run at 10am and 11:30am, with the later sailing offering a lunch option.

Pick this slot if you want to start early, enjoy daytime views, or fit a cruise around other sightseeing plans.

Afternoon cruises (around 1:30pm–3pm)

Afternoon departures give you more time to reach the boarding point without an early start. Mandurah dolphin cruises typically depart at 1:30pm and 3pm, giving you a shorter outing that can fit into a day exploring the town. The light may be stronger for photos, and conditions on the water can vary with the weather.

Pick this slot if you prefer a later start or are already spending the day around Mandurah. If you're planning a longer Swan Valley or lunch cruise, check the operator's schedule, as these usually depart earlier.

Sunset and evening cruises

Sunset and evening options depend on the operator, route and date, so they are not available across every Perth cruise type. When offered, an evening sailing is a good fit if you want to see the river and city as the light changes rather than spend the day on the water. Check whether your chosen cruise is timed for sunset and whether meals or drinks are included before booking.

Pick this slot if evening views are a priority, but don't assume every scenic or dining cruise has a sunset departure.

Season note

From November to March, Swan Valley wine cruises generally run on more days each week than they do from April to October. Summer and school holidays can also be busier for Mandurah dolphin cruises, so booking ahead is sensible. Dolphin cruises operate throughout the year, but sightings are never fully predictable because dolphins are wild. Weather and high water levels can also affect cruise operations; some Swan Valley trips may use coach transfers for part of the journey when river levels are high. Check the operator's timetable and conditions for your date before setting your plans.

What actually happens on a Perth cruise

Board and settle in

Your day starts at the departure point listed on your ticket. Swan River sightseeing cruises usually leave from Barrack Street Jetty in Perth or Fremantle, while Mandurah dolphin cruises depart from Mandurah Cruises Jetty at Mandjar Square. Once on board, find a seat and get comfortable before the boat sets off. Seating arrangements vary by operator, and some cruises have unreserved seating.

Take in the Swan River sights

On a scenic cruise between Perth and Fremantle, you'll pass the city skyline, riverside homes, Kings Park and the busy inner harbour. The captain provides commentary about the sights along the way. Return cruises typically last around 2 hours 45 minutes, giving you time to enjoy the views before heading back to your original departure point.

If you've booked a wine cruise, the day includes more than sailing

Swan Valley wine cruises combine river scenery with food and tastings. Depending on your itinerary, you may cruise upriver, disembark for winery visits and chocolate tastings, then travel by coach between stops. Some tours include lunch, wine tastings, afternoon tea and drinks on the return cruise. Check your ticket for the exact venues and inclusions, as itineraries can change.

Watch for dolphins in Mandurah

On a Mandurah dolphin cruise, the crew guides you through the canals and waterways, pointing out dolphins and local sights. Keep watch from the deck as dolphins feed, rest or swim near the boat. Sightings are not guaranteed because the animals are wild, although selected Mandurah Cruises experiences include a Dolphin Guarantee that allows you to return for free if none are spotted.

Continue exploring or head back

Short scenic and dolphin cruises return to their departure point after the journey. If you're taking a Rottnest Island ferry, the crossing is just the start of the day: once on the island, you can explore beaches, cycle, join a bus tour or look for quokkas before catching your return ferry.

Used for: Pirate Ship Mandurah cruises and selected local boat tours.

Find the jetty near The Bay Cafe, opposite 9 Mandurah Terrace. Parking around the foreshore can be limited on weekends, so allow time to park and walk to the water.

How long do you need?

I have 6 to 7 hours for a wine cruise

Realistic: yes. Captain Cook Cruises’ Swan Valley wine cruise runs from 10:30am to 5pm, taking 6.5 hours. The day includes a river journey, a share-platter lunch, a wine and macaron pairing at Mandoon Estate, and live entertainment and desserts on the return cruise. Arrive at the boarding point before departure and allow extra time to reach the jetty. You’ll spend most of the day on the cruise and scheduled stops, so leave other sightseeing for another day.

I have one full day for Rottnest Island

Realistic: yes, with an early start. The ferry takes around 90 minutes each way from Perth or about 30 minutes from Fremantle. Add your boarding buffer and time on the island, where you can cycle, visit beaches, walk, or look for quokkas. Your total day depends on the ferry timetable and how long you stay ashore. Choosing Fremantle shortens the crossing and leaves more time to explore.

I only have half a day

Realistic: not for Rottnest Island from Perth. The ferry journey alone takes around three hours return, before boarding time and island exploration. A shorter Swan River sightseeing cruise is a better fit if you want to be back in the city within a few hours. Check the cruise duration and departure time before booking, especially if you have another activity planned that day.

Know before you go

  • Most Swan River cruise vessels have restrooms, but facilities and access vary by boat. Some bathrooms are downstairs and reached by narrow or steep stairs.
  • Swan Valley wine cruises include onboard toilets, a bar and EFTPOS facilities. Seating is unallocated, so you may share a table or booth with other guests.
  • Mandurah dolphin cruises have different vessels. The standard Mandjar vessel is wheelchair accessible, but smaller replacement vessels may have different facilities.
  • Food depends on your ticket. Wine cruises may include lunch, tastings and drinks, while Mandurah dolphin cruises offer an optional lunch on selected departures.
  • Wi-Fi is not currently available on Captain Cook Cruises' Swan River vessels.
  • Accessibility varies across Perth cruises. Captain Cook Cruises' James Stirling has ramp access at selected departure points, but passengers must cross a lip to enter the cabin, and seven steep stairs reach its bathrooms.
  • The smaller River Lady is not wheelchair accessible. Mandurah's Mandjar and Dancing Dolphin vessels accommodate wheelchairs and walking frames, but passengers must still be able to board and move safely.
  • Contact the operator before booking to confirm the vessel, boarding arrangements, and toilet access.
  • Sunhat and sunscreen: Open decks can leave you exposed to the sun, especially on longer river and wildlife cruises.
  • Sunglasses: Useful for bright reflections off the water and for viewing the river or coastline.
  • Light jacket or warm top: It can feel cooler on the water, even on a warm day.
  • Camera or phone: Keep it handy for river landmarks, city views and possible dolphin sightings.
  • Waterproof phone pouch: Helpful if you're taking photos near the water or on an exposed deck.
  • Booking confirmation: Keep your ticket or QR code ready to show when boarding.
  • Comfortable shoes: Useful for longer outings that include walking or exploring after the cruise.

Don't overpack: Meals, drinks and tastings are included only on selected tickets. Check your inclusions before bringing extra food or buying supplies. If you're taking a Rottnest Island ferry, check the operator's luggage allowance, particularly if you're carrying a bike or staying overnight.

  • The boat may change: Operators can substitute vessels because of scheduling or passenger numbers, so don't assume a specific boat is guaranteed unless confirmed.
  • A wine cruise isn't just sailing: Swan Valley itineraries can include winery visits, tastings, lunch and coach transfers, depending on the ticket.
  • Dolphins are wild: You may see them feeding or swimming near the boat, but sightings cannot be guaranteed.
  • Not every seat is reserved: Some wine cruises have unallocated seating, and you may share a table with other passengers.
  • A river cruise can involve stairs: Restrooms on some vessels are downstairs, even if boarding itself is accessible.
  • Weather can change the itinerary: High water levels may require a coach transfer for part or all of a Swan Valley cruise journey.
  • Lunch isn't always included: Some Mandurah dolphin cruises offer lunch as an option rather than part of the standard ticket.
  • Choose your cruise by the whole itinerary: For Swan Valley trips, check how much time is spent sailing versus visiting wineries and other stops.
  • Check the vessel before booking: If you need wheelchair access or have difficulty with stairs, ask which boat is scheduled and whether its facilities suit your needs.
  • Plan your photos around the route: Keep your camera ready before the boat passes a landmark instead of waiting until it is directly alongside.
  • Check food inclusions carefully: Wine cruise menus and tastings differ from optional lunch add-ons on shorter wildlife cruises.
  • Leave room in your schedule: Longer cruises and island trips can take most of the day, leaving little time for other activities.

⚠️ Heads-up: Swan Valley cruise itineraries may change because of high river levels, and a coach may replace part of the boat journey. Check the operator's updates before departure.

  • Cancellation by you: Cancellation windows and fees depend on the operator and ticket. Read the conditions before booking.
  • Operator cancellations or changes: Weather, river conditions and operational requirements may affect departure or the itinerary. Check your ticket for the applicable refund or rescheduling policy.
  • Arrival and late boarding: Follow the time on your booking. Mandurah Cruises asks passengers to arrive 15 minutes before departure; Rottnest Express requires check-in at least 30 minutes before boarding.
  • Bags and luggage: Allowances vary by operator. Rottnest Express has specific size and weight limits for carry-on and checked baggage, so check these before travelling.
  • Photography: Personal photography is generally suitable for sightseeing, but follow crew instructions and any restrictions at specific locations.
  • Smoking and vaping: Captain Cook Cruises' Swan River vessels are non-smoking and non-vaping.
  • Dress code: Captain Cook Cruises recommends smart-casual clothing. Check the dress requirements for your specific dining or special-event cruise.
  • Swan Valley wine cruises: The Captain Cook Cruises wine cruise includes a share-platter lunch with wine, a wine and macaron pairing at Mandoon Estate, and dessert on the return journey. All-inclusive wines are served on the return voyage from 3:15pm.
  • Drinks: A welcome drink and specified wine inclusions are part of the cruise. An unlimited premium beverage package is an optional extra.
  • Mandurah dolphin cruises: Lunch is available as an add-on on selected departures, including the 11:30am sailing. Confirm the option when booking.
  • Dietary requirements: Captain Cook Cruises can accommodate vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free lunch requests when booked at least a day ahead. Its limited kitchen facilities mean other special dietary requests cannot be accommodated.
  • Food allergies: Mandurah Cruises warns that its optional lunch is not prepared in a guaranteed allergen-free environment and is unsuitable for guests with anaphylaxis or severe allergies.
  • When you eat: On a wine cruise, food and drinks are served at set points during the journey. Check the itinerary for meal timing and included beverages before booking.

Which Perth cruise should I book?

Choose a Swan River cruise for city and riverside views, a Swan Valley wine cruise for tastings and lunch, a Mandurah dolphin cruise for wildlife watching, or a Rottnest Island ferry trip for a full day of island exploration. The best option depends on how much time you have and what you want to do.
