PerthWhale Watching in PerthWhale Watching Dunsborough

Tucked between rolling vineyards and the shoreline of Geographe Bay, Dunsborough is one of Western Australia’s most scenic coastal towns and a bit of a secret gem for whale watchers. Just three hours south of Perth, this peaceful pocket is a seasonal hotspot for humpbacks and southern rights as they rest, play, and feed close to shore. The best part? You don’t have to go far to see them. Hop aboard a custom-built catamaran right from the Dunsborough Boat Ramp and cruise into calm, sheltered waters where whales are often just metres away.

What to know about Dunsborough

Dunsborough is a laid-back coastal town about 2.5 hours south of Perth, perched on the edge of Geographe Bay. It’s actually a calm, protected stretch of water that just happens to sit right on the Humpback Highway. Every year between September and early December, humpback and southern right whales migrate through these waters, pausing here to rest and play close to shore. That means you’ll often see whales just metres from the boat, without heading into the rough open ocean. With its turquoise bays, forested headlands, and relaxed pace, Dunsborough offers one of WA’s most scenic and whale-rich cruise backdrops.
